Portrait of Mona Mahmudnizhad (The Angel of Shiraz). Mona was an innocent young high school student who endured months of interrogation and torture before she was hanged by the Islamic revolutionary authorities of Shiraz on June 18 1983.  She was only eighteen at the time of her martyrdom and was one of several students and teachers, who were sentenced to death, because of their faith, during a wave of religious persecution and repression which swept Iran during the establishment of the Islamic republic. Mona was born into a loving home and expressed the same qualities of compassion and humility as the other members of her family. She had a beautiful singing voice and a loving radiance that attracted the other children whenever she entered her school.  She was very active in her community and was loved by all who came into contact with her. Her father Yad‘u’llah, a gentle servant and dedicated Baha’i, who had pioneered in the Yemen, was arrested at the same time as Mona and hanged several months earlier.  Shortly before her arrest and martyrdom Mona had a dream in which Baha’u’llah entered the room and showed her three colored capes including the red cape of martyrdom. He sat down and invited her to join Him saying “Come and take a picture with Me.” Mehdi then photographed her sitting with the Blessed Beauty, with an old fashioned camera on a tripod and the flash from the camera woke her up. Mona’s courage and the steadfastness of her family and friends are celebrated and remembered by Bahai’s all over the world.
