Mulla Husayn & the Sifter of Wheat in Isfahan

Siyyid Kazim chose Mulla Husayn to visit Haji Siyyid Muhammad Baqir the leader of the Shaykhi School in Isfahan.  Siyyid Kazim hoped the Haji, could support his followers who then numbered around 100,000 in their quest to discover the identity of the Hidden Imam. Later in Shiraz when Mulla Husayn declared his belief in the Bab as the Gate to the Promised Qá’im, he assumed he would accompany the Bab on his pilgrimage to Mecca. Instead the Bab instructed him to travel to Isfahan, Tehran and Mashhad to proclaim the advent of the Promised Qá’im. The first to embrace the Bab’s Cause was Mulla Ja’far, a sifter of wheat. Later he was seen excitedly carrying a sickle through the bazaar on his way to join Mulla Husayn and his companions at the battle of Fort Tabarsi. The Bab often remarked how out of a city full of clergy, divines and religious institutions that the first to recognize the truth was a sifter of wheat. In this painting we see Mulla Husayn teaching a group of seekers in the madrasa of the Masjid-i-Shah mosque in Isfahan. On the left is Mulla Jafar Isfahani with a bundle of wheat in the foreground.
