Ruhiyyih Khanum’s marriage to Shoghi Effendi in 1937 was a very private and secret event as the Guardian was aware that any major event within the Cause invariably stirred up considerable trouble. Ruhiyyih Khanum recalls how she was dressed entirely in black with a white lace blouse when she visited the Most Sacred Spot at Bahji with the Guardian. He chanted the ‘Tablet of Visitation’ before they returned to Haifa on their wedding day.  There was no celebration, no flowers and no wedding dress or reception, just  a private dinner with her parents during which time the Guardian produced  a handkerchief full of precious flowers from the shrine of Baha’u’llah which he gave to her mother May Maxwell.   Messages of congratulations and rejoicing poured in from all over the world especially from the American believers whose spiritual destiny is to usher in the world Order of Bahaullah as the marriage brought the Occident and the Orient closer together. A few years later Ruhiyyih Khanum accompanied Shoghi Effendi on   a tour of Oxford and the Bodleian Library where, while attending University in 1920, he had studied the literary works of Carlyle and Gibbons whose styles he greatly admired. In fact the Guardian always carried a copy of The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire whenever he traveled. Together they visited Balliol College, the historic streets of Oxford and enjoyed the verdant green walk ways by the banks of the river Thames beyond the wrought iron gates of Oxford University.

This painting captures that romantic visit to Oxford as we see the couple, enjoying the spring air as they pose in front of the river Thames with Balliol College and the walls of the university where Shoghi Effendi once lived as a student, in the background.
