Tahirih Escaping from Qazvin

Tahirih’s outspoken views and courageous proclamation for women’s equality in a male dominated society won her thousands of loyal followers and many admirers from all walks of life including, princesses, wives of ministers and ladies of aristocracy. Her fame and notoriety also brought her anguish and hostility from the religious authorities and she was ordered to leave Baghdad and banished from the Ottoman empire to .Her father, Haji Mulla Salih sent a delegation to Hamadan, a small town inside the Persian border, instructing her to return to her hometown of Qazvin.  Upon her return to her father’s house her estranged husband Mulla Muhammad Baraghani ordered her to return to his house but she refused as three years had passed since their separation. In response he publicly pronounced Tahirih a heretic  in an effort to undermine her popularity and influence. Her father was deeply disturbed by the hostility between the two families and tried in vain to reconcile their differences.

Her uncle Mulla Muhammad Taqi vehemently accused all Babi’s of being heretics and when he was attacked and killed in a mosque , Tahirih’s  husband accused her  of being responsible and conspired to place  her under house arrest and condemn her to death .

Bahaullah arranged for Tahirih’s escape from Qazvin by sending a messenger dressed as a beggar with a letter and instructions as well as horses to secure her safety. In this painting we see Tahirih and her maidservant leaving the city in the middle of the night with the Imamzadeh Housein mosque in the background.
